DMCC Masterplan tender for ‘Dubai’s Burj 2020 District’ underway

Expansion will include the world’s tallest commercial tower, the ‘Burj 2020’

DMCC, the Government of Dubai Authority with a mandate to enhance Dubai’s position as a global gateway for commodity trade and enterprise, announced today that four global design firms are participating in its Masterplan design competition for the new ‘Burj 2020’ District’, which will have as its centrepiece the world’s tallest commercial tower, the ‘Burj 2020’.

The Masterplan aims to enhance the very essence of the ‘Burj 2020 District’ by creating an efficient and vibrant world-class urban business destination to showcase a blend of contemporary and traditional Masterplanning. The Masterplan will also include transport and traffic flow solutions to create a swift journey to and from the area.

Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman, DMCC, said:

“The Masterplan design competition is the next natural step of the development. We have selected four of the world’s top creative, specialised firms to design a Masterplan for the ‘Burj 2020 District’. Smart solutions will be a principle feature of our new development, affording higher levels of efficiency and urban sustainability a pre-requisite for the global business community of the future.

We are going to create the optimal environment for trade and enterprise with a commercial district that brings together retail, residential, business and lifestyle services. It will also increase tourism, attract more international investors to the region, as well as becoming a major hub for multi-nationals enabling these businesses to grow, innovate and trade, which again impacts positively on Dubai ‘s GDP.”

The ‘Burj 2020 District’ is being constructed as a direct result of customer demand in particular from large regional corporates, multi-nationals and multi-business entities.

“The availability of highly efficient, purpose built commercial office space suitable for multi-national companies is in short supply. DMCC is committed to filling this gap and the ‘Burj 2020 District will be the first to do so”, Bin Sulayem, added.

The Masterplan design competition for the ‘Burj 2020 District’ follows DMCC’s announcement in July 2013 to build the world’s tallest commercial tower as part of its Free Zone expansion plans; DMCC named the tower ‘Burj 2020’ in November 2013 in honour of Dubai’s Expo 2020 win. The ground breaking for the ‘Burj 2020 District’ is planned for 2015.

The ‘Burj 2020 District’ is also part of DMCC’s strategy to provide companies with a commercial property offering unique to the Dubai marketplace – including benefits such as single ownership, contiguous commercial office space in the heart of Dubai, close to metro stations, world-class cargo facilities, ports and airports that connect to over 220 destinations including the new Al Maktoum International Airport.

Businesses around the globe look for a place where they can expand, access new markets and conduct their day-to-day operations in a secure, transparent and modern environment. DMCC provides this infrastructure with its existing 66 mixed-use commercial and residential towers and over 220 retail outlets in operation, there are currently over 85,000 people working and living within the DMCC Free Zone in Dubai today. With an average of 200 companies choosing to join DMCC each month and a 94% retention rate, DMCC remains the UAE’s largest and fastest growing free zone with over 8,700 member companies. www.dmcc.ae
