Adhering to LEED gold standards
In line with DMCC’s mandate to facilitate the expansion of the tea trade in accordance with international best practice, the DMCC Tea Centre’s tea tag envelope printing and packaging facility was designed to adhere to LEED Gold standards under the 2009 new construction rating system. Our new tea packaging facility incorporates a range of sustainable building features including 10.5% recyclable content, a 22% reduction in energy consumption, 50% reduction in water use and a 98% diversion rate of waste construction material away from landfill. The LEED rating system is a consensus-based green building rating developed by the US Green Building Council and now mandated in Dubai for public buildings and infrastructure.
Improving indoor air quality
To ensure both the health of our staff and the tea quality, our consultants and contractors installed MERV 14 filters, removing over 98% of all airborne dust particles, a 10ft mat to prevent dust and contaminants from entering while enabling green cleaning. The entire project also used less hazardous interior paints and coatings, the carpeting was selected to meet the off-gassing requirements of the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Green Label Plus testing criteria.
Additional sustainable measures
These include roofing material with a high solar reflectance index to reduce solar warming, high performance materials limit thermal convection and conduction from outside of the building and solar hot water systems. Energy and water saving technologies include high efficiency light fixtures and chillers, low water consumption and sensor mixers. Along with bicycle racks and shower facilities, a shuttle bus service to the metro and limited parking facilities encourage use of bikes and buses.
