The DMCC Tea Centre

DMCC Tea Centre

Strengthening the tea trade in Dubai

DMCC launched its Tea Centre in 2005 to strengthen the tea trade in Dubai through the introduction of world-class facilities and international best practices. The DMCC Tea Centre is a dedicated facility combining warehousing, blending and packaging, providing the most complete and convenient solution for traders looking to maintain a stock capable of meeting the requirements of importers in the Middle East and adjacent regions. We now process teas from 13 different tea-producing countries and in keeping with our mandate facilitate the trade of tea to buyers internationally.

Setting up a business

A purpose-built infrastructure of processing facilities, market venues, business services and a growing community of producers, trading parties and entrepreneurs. Located within Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA) and with a DMCC licence, our members have the option of 100% business ownership and a lack of personal and corporate tax or restrictions of capital repatriation or currency common to Dubai Free Zones.

Member benefits

Limited free storage for limited periods, access to a tea blending unit, tea bag and loose tea packing facilities, tea tasting and in-house expertise, networking opportunities. Our members include tea producers, exporters, regional importers and international merchants, all attracted by our exclusive range of services, industrial clustering and the broad opportunities of our dynamic trade ecosystem and community.

Re-exporting hub

At the DMCC Tea Centre, we liaise with Dubai Customs to ensure the very latest data is available and provides our end users with an accurate high level overview of Dubai’s trade flow. The UAE is the world's largest re-exporter of tea with a 60% share of the market and 750,000 kg annually passing through the UAE, valued at US$48 million per annum. This demonstrates the success of the region and our members.

Adhering to LEED gold standards

In line with DMCC’s mandate to facilitate the expansion of the tea trade in accordance with international best practice, the DMCC Tea Centre’s Tea Tag Envelope Printing & Packaging Facility was designed to adhere to LEED Gold standards under the 2009 new construction rating system. Our new tea packaging facility incorporates a range of sustainable building features including 10.5% recyclable content, a 22% reduction in energy consumption, 50% reduction in water use and a 98% diversion rate of waste construction material away from landfill. The LEED rating system is a consensus-based green building rating developed by the US Green Building Council and now mandated in Dubai for public buildings and infrastructure.

Chawla Architectural and Consulting Engineers designed the structure in consultation with the Middle East Centre for Sustainable Development and Pacific Control Systems as building commissioner. Construction was carried out by main contractor Systems Construct, HVAC systems were installed by MEP contractor Climate Control Co, followed by the envelope testing, and final commissioning by Pacific Control Systems.

To ensure both the health of our staff and the tea quality, our consultants and contractors installed MERV 14 filters, removing over 98% of all airborne dust particles, a 10ft mat to prevent dust and contaminants from entering while enabling green cleaning. The entire project also used less hazardous interior paints and coatings, the carpeting was selected to meet the off-gassing requirements of the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Green Label Plus testing criteria.

These include roofing material with a high solar reflectance index to reduce solar warming, high performance materials limit thermal convection and conduction from outside of the building and solar hot water systems. Energy and water saving technologies include high efficiency light fixtures and chillers, low water consumption and sensor mixers. Along with bicycle racks and shower facilities, a shuttle bus service to the metro and limited parking facilities encourage use of bikes and buses.
