Ancient Jewellery through the Years

About the event

Ancient jewellery and UAE’s rich archaeological history were explored at our webinar with Marie-Claire Bakker – an expert who has been documenting and researching jewellery of the region for over 30 years.

She gave an overview of archaeological jewellery finds in the Arabian Peninsula and the main materials used, as well as understand the social function, symbolism and ritual significance of jewellery in the region.

MARIE-CLAIRE BAKKER

Marie-Claire Bakker holds an MA in Arabic from the University of Edinburgh UK, and an MPhil in Ethnology and Museum Ethnography from the University of Oxford, UK. She has been documenting and researching jewellery in the region for over 30 years. Her cross-disciplinary research includes the documentation of social change using the material culture of the Arabian Gulf; student engagement and culturally embedded pedagogy in the creative sector higher education in the UAE and wider Gulf region, and how digital humanities tools and global sustainability goals can be integrated into the design curriculum. Other research focuses on the concept of liminality as a lens through which to discuss a comparative ethnography of islands in the Arabian Gulf. Marie-Claire is Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, College of Arts and Creative Enterprises at Zayed University, Abu Dhabi and teaches material culture, art history and curatorial subjects.
