Uzbekistan Initiative

Currently ranked the world’s third largest cotton exporter, the Republic of Uzbekistan has vast natural resources and minerals, and has been an established trading hub since the Silk Road era. It produces approximately 1.2 million metric tonne (MT) of cotton fibre, exporting almost 800,000 MT annually, and has established itself as a reliable exporter.

Since gaining independence in 1991, the cotton industry in Uzbekistan has developed significantly both domestically and in production for export. This includes an efficient logistics system with 21 specialised cotton terminals, including six bonded warehouses, capable of storing a volume of up to 400,000MT. Realising the significance of China’s consumer market, it has since expanded its delivery operations through Alashankou in the Chinese province of Xinjiang

DMCC’s Uzbekistan cotton trade initiative builds on the excellent bilateral ties between the UAE and Uzbekistan. As part of this strategic initiative, DMCC facilitates the trade of Uzbek cotton into new markets via Dubai Cotton Centre (DCC). DCC plays an integral part in Uzbekistan’s cotton marketing initiatives such as the annual Uzbekistan Cotton Fair.

DCC also offers a wide range of value-added services all intended to help diversify the market for Uzbek cotton. These include electronic bids and offers for cotton*, warehousing and storage in Dubai, transportation from Dubai to various textile producing countries in the Far East.

Since the of signing a framework agreement with Uzprommashimpeks in 2008, DCC has since re-exported over 50,000 MT of Uzbek cotton fibre with a CNF value of USD $100m.
